Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दृष्ट्वा ताम् अशुचिम् शक्रः पादयोः कृत मूर्धजाम् ।
शिरः स्थाने कृतौ पादौ जहास च मुमोद च ॥१-४६-१७॥
dṛṣṭvā tām aśucim śakraḥ pādayoḥ kṛta mūrdhajām । śiraḥ sthāne kṛtau pādau jahāsa ca mumoda ca ॥1-46-17॥
Translation
Seeing her in that impure state, with her hair touching her feet and her feet placed where the head should be, Shakra (Indra) laughed and rejoiced.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्हें अशुद्ध अवस्था में, सिर के बालों को पैरों पर और पैरों को सिर के स्थान पर रखे हुए देखकर, शक्र (इंद्र) हंसे और अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।
English Commentary
Indra’s laughter here signifies immense relief rather than mere cruelty. For a thousand years, he had served Diti humbly, waiting for a single breach of protocol. The word ashuchim (impure) is legally significant here; as long as Diti was pure, her womb was impregnable due to the power of her penance. Seeing her posture inverted (hair touching feet), Indra realized her defense was broken. His rejoicing stems from the sudden assurance of survival and the preservation of his sovereignty, which had been under threat.

इंद्र की हंसी क्रूरता की नहीं, बल्कि राहत की हंसी है। वह एक सहस्र वर्षों से अपनी सौतेली माँ की सेवा कर रहे थे, केवल इस एक क्षण की प्रतीक्षा में कि कब वह नियम भंग करें। 'अशुचिम्' (अशुद्ध) शब्द यहाँ महत्वपूर्ण है; असुरों की माता होने के बावजूद, दिति तप के कारण अभेद्य थीं। जैसे ही पवित्रता भंग हुई, वह भेद्य हो गईं। इंद्र का 'मुमोद' (प्रसन्न होना) यह दर्शाता है कि उन्हें अपने सिंहासन और प्राणों की रक्षा का अवसर अंततः मिल गया।
