मा रुदो मा रुदः च इति गर्भम् शक्रो अभ्यभाषत ।
बिभेद च महातेजा रुदन्तम् अपि वासवः ॥१-४६-२०॥
mā rudo mā rudaḥ ca iti garbham śakro abhyabhāṣata । bibheda ca mahātejā rudantam api vāsavaḥ ॥1-46-20॥
Translation
Shakra said to the fetus, "Do not cry, do not cry (Ma ruda)," and even as it cried, the mighty Vasava cut it further.
हिंदी अनुवाद
शक्र (इंद्र) ने उस गर्भ से कहा, "रो मत, रो मत (मा रुदः)"। और ऐसा कहते हुए महातेजस्वी वासव ने उस रोते हुए गर्भ को पुनः काट दिया।
English Commentary
This verse contains the etymological origin of the Maruts. Indra commands, "Ma ruda" (Do not cry). From this phrase, the Wind Gods derive their name. Indra’s action here—cutting the fetus even as it cried—shows the ruthlessness required of a king protecting his throne. According to tradition, after the initial seven cuts, the continued crying led Indra to slice each piece into seven more, resulting in 49 parts. It illustrates the separation of the primal force into the manifold distinct wind currents.

यह श्लोक ऐतिहासिक और व्युत्पत्ति (etymological) दृष्टि से अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। इंद्र ने कहा "मा रुदः" (रो मत)। इन्हीं शब्दों से आगे चलकर इन टुकड़ों का नाम 'मरुत' पड़ा। इंद्र की कठोरता यहाँ दिखाई देती है—हालांकि गर्भ रो रहा था, इंद्र ने दया नहीं दिखाई और उसे पुनः काटा। पुराणों के अनुसार, पहले सात टुकड़े हुए, और फिर रोने पर इंद्र ने प्रत्येक के सात-सात टुकड़े किए, जिससे कुल ४९ (49) मरुत बने। यह राजनीति है: शत्रु शेष न रहे।
