प्रांजलिः वज्र सहितो दितिम् शक्रो अभ्यभाषत ।
अशुचिः देवि सुप्ता असि पादयोः कृत मूर्धजा ॥१-४६-२२॥
prāñjaliḥ vajra sahito ditim śakro abhyabhāṣata । aśuciḥ devi suptā asi pādayoḥ kṛta mūrdhajā ॥1-46-22॥
Translation
With folded hands, yet holding the thunderbolt, Shakra spoke to Diti: "O Goddess, you slept in an impure state with your hair touching your feet."

हाथ जोड़े हुए, (परंतु) वज्र धारण किए हुए, इंद्र ने दिति से कहा—"हे देवी! आप अशुद्ध होकर, पैरों पर बाल रखकर सो गई थीं।"
English Commentary
The visual imagery here is striking: Indra stands with Pranjali (folded hands), a sign of submission and respect, yet he still holds the Vajra (thunderbolt), the instrument of violence. This encapsulates the complexity of Dharma—reverence mixed with duty. Indra offers a technical justification for his actions. He explains that her impurity (ashuchi) broke the spiritual contract, allowing him to intervene. It is not an apology for the intent, but an explanation of the opportunity.
