Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सा अहम् तपः चरिष्यामि गर्भम् मे दातुम् अर्हसि ।
ईश्वरम् शक्र हन्तारम् त्वम् अनुज्ञातुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥१-४६-३॥
Sā aham tapaḥ cariṣyāmi garbham me dātum arhasi । Īśvaram śakra hantāram tvam anujñātum arhasi ॥ ॥1-46-3॥
Translation
"I shall perform penance. You ought to grant me a pregnancy. You should permit me (bless me with) a powerful ruler who will be the slayer of Shakra (Indra)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं तपस्या करूँगी। आप मुझे गर्भ प्रदान करने की कृपा करें। आप मुझे ऐसे प्रभावशाली पुत्र का वरदान दें जो शक्र (इन्द्र) का वध करने वाला हो।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the depth of Diti's grief and her thirst for vengeance following the destruction of her sons, the Daityas. She approaches her husband, Sage Kashyapa, not merely for offspring, but specifically for a weapon against Indra. The use of the word Ishvaram here denotes a capable ruler or master—someone with the inherent power to challenge and destroy the King of Gods. Diti realizes that a biologically normal birth is insufficient to defeat Indra; thus, she pledges to perform Tapas (penance) to sustain the potent energy required for such a formidable child.

दिति का यह कथन उनके गहरे शोक और प्रतिशोध की भावना को दर्शाता है। अपने पुत्रों (दैत्यों) के विनाश से दुखी होकर, वह अपने पति कश्यप से केवल एक पुत्र नहीं, बल्कि इन्द्र के काल (मृत्यु) की माँग करती हैं। यहाँ 'ईश्वरम्' शब्द का प्रयोग सामान्य ईश्वर के लिए नहीं, बल्कि एक ऐसे समर्थ और प्रभावशाली शासक के लिए किया गया है जो देवराज इन्द्र को हराने की क्षमता रखता हो। दिति जानती हैं कि सामान्य पुत्र इन्द्र का सामना नहीं कर सकता, इसलिए वह तपस्या के माध्यम से उस तेज को धारण करने का संकल्प लेती हैं। यह श्लोक माता के क्रोध और संकल्प की पराकाष्ठा है।
