Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य पुत्रो महातेजाः सम्प्रति एष पुरीम् इमाम् ।
आवसत् परम प्रख्यः सुमतिः नाम दुर्जयः ॥१-४७-१७॥
tasya putro mahātejāḥ samprati eṣa purīm imām । āvasat parama prakhyaḥ sumatiḥ nāma durjayaḥ ॥1-47-17॥
Translation
"His (Kakutstha's) son is the greatly radiant, highly famous, and invincible Sumati, who currently resides in (rules) this city."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"उनके (काकुत्स्थ के) पुत्र महातेजस्वी, परम प्रसिद्ध और अजेय (दुर्जय) 'सुमति' हैं, जो इस समय इस (विशाला) नगरी में निवास करते हैं (शासन करते हैं)।"
English Commentary
Vishvamitra brings the genealogy to the present tense. Sumati is the reigning monarch of Vishala. Described as Durjaya (invincible/hard to conquer) and Parama prakhyah (highly renouned), he is portrayed as a capable ruler. The use of samprati (currently/now) signals the end of the historical lesson and prepares Rama and Lakshmana for the immediate diplomatic encounter with this king.

विश्वामित्र वंशावली को वर्तमान तक ले आए हैं। 'सुमति' इस समय विशाला के राजा हैं। उनके लिए 'दुर्जय' (जिसे जीतना कठिन हो) और 'परम प्रख्यः' (अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध) विशेषणों का प्रयोग यह बताता है कि वे एक समर्थ और प्रतिष्ठित राजा हैं। 'सम्प्रति' (इस समय) शब्द से स्पष्ट होता है कि यह इतिहास नहीं, बल्कि वर्तमान स्थिति का परिचय है, ताकि राम और लक्ष्मण राजा से मिलने के लिए मानसिक रूप से तैयार हो सकें।
