सुमतिः तु महातेजा विश्वामित्रम् उपागतम् ।
श्रुत्वा नर वर श्रेष्ठः प्रत्यागच्छन् महायशाः ॥१-४७-२०॥
sumatiḥ tu mahātejāḥ viśvāmitram upāgatam । śrutvā nara vara śreṣṭhaḥ pratyāgacchan mahāyaśāḥ ॥1-47-20॥
Translation
When the greatly radiant Sumati, best among men, heard that Vishvamitra had arrived, the glorious king went out to meet him.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महातेजस्वी और नरों में श्रेष्ठ राजा सुमति ने जब सुना कि विश्वामित्र आए हैं, तो वे महायशस्वी राजा (उनके स्वागत के लिए) तुरंत सम्मुख (अगवानी करने) आए।
English Commentary
This verse exemplifies the Vedic protocol of Atithi Devo Bhava (The Guest is God). Despite being a sovereign king, Sumati does not wait in his court but rushes out (pratyagacchan) to receive Vishvamitra upon hearing of his arrival. This shows deep reverence for spiritual authority. Vishvamitra commands double respect here—as a Brahmarishi and as a former king of the same Lunar/Solar lineage network.

'अतिथि देवो भव' की परंपरा का निर्वाह यहाँ स्पष्ट दिखता है। राजा होते हुए भी सुमति अपने महल में बैठकर ऋषि का इंतज़ार नहीं करते, बल्कि समाचार मिलते ही स्वयं 'प्रत्यागच्छन्' (अगवानी के लिए बाहर आए)। विश्वामित्र केवल एक ऋषि नहीं, बल्कि पूर्व में एक महान राजा भी रह चुके हैं, इसलिए सुमति का यह आचरण ऋषियों के प्रति सम्मान और राजसी शिष्टाचार (Protocol) दोनों को दर्शाता है।
