प्रियम् त्वत् कृतम् इच्छामि मम गर्भ विपर्यये ।
मरुताम् सप्त सप्तानाम् स्थानपाला भवन्तु ते ॥१-४७-३॥
priyam tvat kṛtam icchāmi mama garbha viparyaye । marutām sapta saptānām sthānapālā bhavantu te ॥1-47-3॥
Translation
"Even though my pregnancy has gone awry, I wish for a favor from you. Let these seven groups of seven (Maruts) become the guardians of the wind regions."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मेरे गर्भ का नाश (विपर्यय) होने पर भी, मैं चाहती हूं कि तुम मेरा एक प्रिय कार्य करो। ये (मेरे पुत्र), जो सात-सात (कुल ४९) मरुत हैं, वे वातस्कंधों (वायु लोकों) के स्थानपाल (रक्षक) बनें।"
English Commentary
In a masterstroke of maternal negotiation, Diti secures a divine future for her offspring. Since they can no longer be Indra's slayers, she asks that they become his allies and gods in their own right. The phrase sapta saptanam refers to the 49 Maruts (7 groups of 7). She requests they become sthanapala (guardians of the celestial regions/winds). Thus, the tragedy is transmuted: beings intended to be demons (Asuras) are purified by the Vajra and Diti's blessing to become Vedic gods (Maruts), eternal companions of Indra.

यहाँ दिति एक माता के रूप में अपने बच्चों का भविष्य सुरक्षित कर रही हैं। यद्यपि वे इंद्र को मारने के लिए जन्मे थे, अब वे देवता बनकर रहें। 'सप्त सप्तानाम्' का अर्थ है सात समूहों में सात, यानी कुल ४९ मरुत। दिति चाहती हैं कि वे 'स्थानपाल' (divine guardians) बनें। इस प्रकार, जो 'दैत्य' बनने वाले थे, वे दिति की समझदारी और इंद्र के शस्त्र-प्रहार (शुद्धिकरण) से 'देवता' (मरुत) बन गए और इंद्र के सहायक हो गए।
