तस्य अन्तरम् विदित्वा तु सहस्राक्षः शची पतिः ।
मुनि वेष धरो भूत्वा अहल्याम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥१-४८-१८॥
Tasya antaram viditvaa tu sahasraakshah shachee patih |
Muni vesha dharo bhootvaa ahalyaam idam abraveet ॥1-48-18॥
Translation
Knowing the opportunity (finding the Sage absent), the thousand-eyed Lord of Shachi (Indra), assuming the guise of the Sage, spoke these words to Ahalya.

उस (गौतम ऋषि) की अनुपस्थिति का अवसर जानकर, शचीपति इंद्र ने मुनि (गौतम) का वेष धारण किया और अहल्या से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Indra, the King of Gods, is depicted here succumbing to lust, abandoning the dignity of his station. The phrase antaram viditvaa implies finding a gap or a lapse in surveillance—specifically, the time when Sage Gautama left for his daily ablutions. Indra adopts the guise of the Sage (Muni vesha) to deceive, although his intent is malicious. Referring to him as Shachi pati (Husband of Shachi) highlights the irony and moral transgression; despite having a divine consort, he seeks another's wife. This sets the stage for the conflict between celestial power and ascetic purity.

देवराज इंद्र यहाँ अपने पद की गरिमा को त्यागकर काम के वशीभूत हो जाते हैं। 'अन्तरम् विदित्वा' का अर्थ है छिद्र या अवसर ढूँढना। जैसे ही गौतम ऋषि स्नान और नित्य कर्म के लिए आश्रम से बाहर गए, इंद्र ने यह कुकृत्य करने का विचार किया। वे 'मुनि वेष धरो' अर्थात छलपूर्वक गौतम ऋषि का रूप धरकर आए। इंद्र को 'शची पति' कहा गया है, जो यह याद दिलाता है कि अपनी धर्मपत्नी शची के होते हुए भी वे पर-स्त्री गमन के लिए उद्यत हैं, जो उनके चारित्रिक पतन को दर्शाता है। यह श्लोक कामवासना की प्रबलता को दिखाता है जो विवेक को हर लेती है।
