गृहीत समिधम् तत्र स कुशम् मुनि पुंगवम् ।
दृष्ट्वा सुर पतिः त्रस्तो विषण्ण वदनो अभवत् ॥ ॥१-४८-२६॥
Griheeta samidham tatra sa kusham muni pungavam |
Drishtvaa sura patih trasto vishanna vadano abhavat ॥1-48-26॥
Translation
Seeing that best of sages holding sacrificial wood (Samidha) and Kusha grass, the Lord of Gods became terrified, and his face turned pale (melancholic).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हाथ में समिधा (हवन की लकड़ी) और कुश (डाभ) लिए हुए उस मुनिपुंगव को देखकर, सुरपति (इंद्र) भयभीत (त्रस्त) हो गए और उनका मुख निस्तेज (विषण्ण) हो गया।
English Commentary
Gautama is depicted holding the symbols of peace and piety—samidha (firewood) and kusha grass—yet he strikes terror into Indra. Upon seeing the Muni Pungava (Bull among sages), Indra becomes trasta (terrified). His reaction is physical: vishanna vadano (face becoming dejected/pale). This signifies the immediate crushing of Indra's pride. The guilt of his action combined with the overwhelming aura of the Sage drains the color from the face of the King of Gods.

गौतम ऋषि के हाथों में अस्त्र-शस्त्र नहीं, बल्कि यज्ञ की सामग्री—समिधा और कुश—हैं। फिर भी, उनका प्रभाव किसी योद्धा से कम नहीं है। इंद्र उन्हें देखते ही 'त्रस्तो' (अत्यंत भयभीत) हो गए। 'विषण्ण वदनो' का अर्थ है चेहरे की हवाईयां उड़ जाना या चेहरा उतर जाना। जो इंद्र तीनों लोकों पर शासन करते हैं, वे एक तपस्वी के सामने नितांत असहाय और लज्जित अनुभव कर रहे हैं। यह श्लोक सात्विक शक्ति के आगे राजसिक सत्ता के समर्पण को दर्शाता है।
