अथ दृष्ट्वा सहस्राक्षम् मुनि वेष धरम् मुनिः ।
दुर्वृत्तम् वृत्त संपन्नो रोषात् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥१-४८-२७॥
Atha drishtvaa sahasraaksham muni vesha dharam munih |
Durvrittam vritta sampanno roshaat vachanam abraveet ॥1-48-27॥
Translation
Then, seeing the thousand-eyed one in the guise of a sage, the Sage (Gautama), who was rich in good conduct, spoke these words in anger to the one of wicked conduct.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुनि वेष धारण किए हुए उस दुराचारी (इंद्र) को देखकर, सदाचारी (वृत्त संपन्न) मुनि (गौतम) ने रोष (क्रोध) पूर्वक यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
The contrast is sharply drawn between the durvrittam (misbehaving/wicked) Indra and the vritta sampanno (virtuous/rich in conduct) Gautama. Gautama sees through the disguise instantly. Seeing the King of Gods hiding in the guise of a holy man to commit adultery provokes righteous indignation (rosha). The Sage does not hesitate or negotiate; his response is immediate and stems from his adherence to Dharma.

यहाँ दो विपरीत ध्रुवों का सामना है: एक 'दुर्वृत्तम्' (दुराचारी/बुरे चरित्र वाला) इंद्र और दूसरे 'वृत्त संपन्नो' (सदाचारी/चरित्रवान) गौतम। गौतम ने तुरंत पहचान लिया कि उनके वेश में यह सहस्राक्ष (इंद्र) है। अपने ही रूप का दुरुपयोग और पत्नी का सतीत्व भंग होते देख ऋषि का क्रोधित होना स्वाभाविक है। 'रोषात्' (क्रोध से) उन्होंने जो वचन कहे, वे अगले श्लोक में श्राप के रूप में प्रकट होते हैं। यह धर्म और अधर्म के बीच का सीधा संवाद है।
