मम रूपम् समास्थाय कृतवान् असि दुर्मते ।
अकर्तव्यम् इदम् यस्मात् विफलः त्वम् भविष्यति ॥ ॥१-४८-२८॥
Mama roopam samaasthaya kritavaan asi durmate |
Akartavyam idam yasmaat viphalah tvam bhavishyati ॥1-48-28॥
Translation
"O evil-minded one! Since, assuming my form, you have done this forbidden act, you shall become fruitless (scrotum-less/impotent)."

"रे दुर्मति! मेरा रूप धारण करके तूने यह न करने योग्य (अकर्तव्य) कार्य किया है, इसलिए तू विफल (अंडकोष रहित/नपुंसक) हो जाएगा।"
English Commentary
Gautama pronounces the curse. He addresses Indra as durmate (fool/evil-minded). The crime is twofold: identity theft (mama roopam samaasthaya) and the forbidden sexual act (akartavyam). The punishment fits the crime literally. Viphalah usually means unsuccessful or fruitless, but in this biological context, it implies being deprived of the "fruits" or testicles (petalu vrishanau, as clarified in the next verse). Gautama strips Indra of the very virility that drove him to commit the sin.

यह वह भयानक श्राप है जिसने इंद्र की स्थिति बदल दी। ऋषि उन्हें 'दुर्मते' (बुरी बुद्धि वाले) कहते हैं। अपराध यह था कि उन्होंने 'अकर्तव्यम्' (जो नहीं करना चाहिए, निषिद्ध कर्म) किया और वह भी छलपूर्वक ऋषि का रूप धरकर। दण्ड के रूप में ऋषि ने कहा 'विफलः त्वम् भविष्यति'। 'विफल' का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'फल रहित', लेकिन यहाँ संदर्भ में इसका अर्थ 'अंडकोष रहित' (testicles falling off) है, जिससे इंद्र अपनी पौरुष शक्ति खो बैठेंगे। यह कामुकता के अपराध के लिए सबसे कठोर और उपयुक्त दंड था।
