वायु भक्षा निराहारा तप्यन्ती भस्म शायिनी ।
अदृश्या सर्व भूतानाम् आश्रमे अस्मिन् वषिस्यसि ॥ ॥१-४८-३१॥
vāyu bhakṣā nirāhārā tapyantī bhasma śāyinī |
adṛśyā sarva bhūtānām āśrame asmin vaṣisyasi ॥1-48-31॥
Translation
"Subsisting on air alone, without food, sleeping on ashes, and invisible to all beings, you shall live in this hermitage doing penance."

"तुम केवल वायु का भक्षण करती हुई, बिना किसी अन्य आहार के, राख (भस्म) पर शयन करती हुई और समस्त प्राणियों के लिए अदृश्य होकर, पश्चाताप की अग्नि में तपती हुई इस आश्रम में रहोगी।"
English Commentary
This verse defines the rigorous nature of Ahalya's penance. The terms Vayu bhakshaa (eating air) and Niraahara (foodless) signify a total withdrawal from sensory gratification. Sleeping on ashes symbolizes mortality and humility. Crucially, the word Adrishya (invisible) clarifies a common misconception in later folklore: in Valmiki's text, Ahalya does not turn into a rock literally; rather, she becomes invisible to all beings, entering a state of intense spiritual seclusion. She remains in the ashram but exists on a different plane of energy, shielded by her own penance. This invisibility represents the social and spiritual isolation required to cleanse the soul of deep-seated impurities.

यह श्लोक अहिल्या के शाप की कठोरता और उसके स्वरूप को स्पष्ट करता है। 'वायु भक्षा' और 'निराहारा' का अर्थ है भौतिक सुखों और जीवन-यापन के साधनों का पूर्ण त्याग। 'भस्म शायिनी' का अर्थ है अहंकार का नाश और पूर्ण वैराग्य। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण शब्द 'अदृश्या' (अदृश्य) है। वाल्मीकि रामायण के अनुसार अहिल्या पत्थर नहीं बनी थीं, बल्कि वे 'अदृश्य' हो गई थीं—अर्थात वे भौतिक जगत से कटकर एक सूक्ष्म, तेजोमय और तपस्यारत अवस्था में चली गई थीं जहाँ कोई साधारण प्राणी उन्हें देख नहीं सकता था। यह अवस्था 'प्रायश्चित' की चरम सीमा है जहाँ व्यक्ति संसार के लिए अस्तित्वहीन हो जाता है ताकि वह स्वयं को भीतर से पुनर्जीवित कर सके।
