यदृच्छया एव गाम् प्राप्तौ देवलोकात् इव अमरौ ।
कथम् पद्भ्याम् इह प्राप्तौ किम् अर्थम् कस्य वा मुने ॥१-४८-४॥
yadṛcchayā eva gām prāptau devalokāt iva amarau । katham padbhyām iha prāptau kim artham kasya vā mune ॥1-48-4॥
Translation
"They look like two immortals who have descended from the world of gods to earth by their own will. O Sage! How have they arrived here on foot? For what purpose, and whose sons are they?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मानो स्वेच्छा (यदृच्छया) से देवलोक से पृथ्वी (गाम्) पर उतर चुके दो अमर (देवता) हों। हे मुने! ये यहाँ पैदल (पद्भ्याम्) कैसे आए? किस उद्देश्य (किम् अर्थम्) से आए हैं और ये किसके पुत्र (कस्य वा) हैं?"
English Commentary
Sumati is baffled by the contradiction: they look like royalty or gods (Amarau), yet they travel like ascetics—on foot (padbhyam). In the epic context, walking implies penance or exile, which contrasts with their royal bearing. He fires a series of questions: How? Why (kim artham)? Whose (kasya)? This interrogation sets the scene for Vishvamitra to reveal their true identity as the princes of Ayodhya.

सुमति के मन में भारी कौतूहल है। 'पद्भ्याम्' (पैदल) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है। राजकुमारों को रथ या घोड़ों पर होना चाहिए, पैदल चलना तपस्वियों का काम है। यह विरोधाभास राजा को खटक रहा है। 'कस्य वा' (किसके हैं) पूछकर वे कुल जानना चाहते हैं, क्योंकि ऐसे तेजस्वी बालक किसी साधारण कुल के नहीं हो सकते। सुमति को विश्वास नहीं हो रहा कि ये मनुष्य हैं, इसलिए वे बार-बार 'अमरौ' (देवता) शब्द का प्रयोग कर रहे हैं।
