किम् अर्थम् च नर श्रेष्ठौ सम्प्राप्तौ दुर्गमे पथि ।
वर आयुध धरौ वीरौ श्रोतुम् इच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥ ॥१-४८-६॥
Kim artham cha nara shreshthau sampraaptau durgame pathi |
Vara ayudha dharau veerau shrotum icchaami tattvatah ॥1-48-6॥
Translation
"For what purpose have these two heroes, best among men, bearing excellent weapons, arrived upon this difficult path? I wish to hear the truth of this matter."

"उत्तम आयुध धारण करने वाले, नरों में श्रेष्ठ ये दोनों वीर किस प्रयोजन से इस दुर्गम मार्ग पर आये हैं? मैं इस विषय में यथार्थ रूप से सुनना चाहता हूँ।"
English Commentary
King Sumati expresses his curiosity to Sage Vishvamitra regarding the presence of Rama and Lakshmana. Despite their youth, the princes radiate valor and are equipped with superior weaponry suitable for warriors. Sumati’s question arises from astonishment, as the forest path is described as durgame (difficult to traverse) and typically unsuited for young princes of royalty. By using the word tattvatah (in reality/truth), Sumati indicates a desire to know the deeper purpose of their journey, beyond mere travel. He perceives that their arrival is significant. Addressing them as nara shreshthau (best among men) and veerau (heroes), the King instinctively recognizes the divinity and martial prowess latent in the young brothers, prompting him to ask why such noble figures are wandering the rugged wilderness.

राजा सुमति महर्षि विश्वामित्र से श्री राम और लक्ष्मण के विषय में जिज्ञासा प्रकट करते हैं। ये दोनों राजकुमार अपनी बाल्यावस्था में भी तेज और पराक्रम से परिपूर्ण हैं, और उनके कंधों पर उत्तम धनुष और तरकश शोभायमान हैं। राजा सुमति का प्रश्न स्वाभाविक है क्योंकि वन का मार्ग अत्यंत दुर्गम और कठिनाइयों से भरा है, जो प्रायः कोमल राजकुमारों के लिए उपयुक्त नहीं माना जाता। राजा 'तत्त्वतः' शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं, जिसका अर्थ है कि वे केवल औपचारिक परिचय नहीं, बल्कि उनके आगमन का वास्तविक और गूढ़ कारण जानना चाहते हैं। क्या ये किसी विशेष दैवीय कार्य के लिए आए हैं? राजा की दृष्टि इन बालकों के 'नरश्रेष्ठ' और 'वीर' स्वरूप को पहचान लेती है, जो यह संकेत देता है कि उनका व्यक्तित्व साधारण नहीं है।
