विश्वामित्र वचः श्रुत्वा राजा परम विस्मितः ॥ ॥१-४८-८॥
Vishvaamitra vachah shrutvaa raajaa parama vismitah ॥1-48-8॥
Translation
Hearing the words of Vishvamitra, the King was highly astonished.

विश्वामित्र के वचन सुनकर राजा सुमति परम विस्मित (अत्यंत चकित) हुए।
English Commentary
King Sumati’s reaction is one of profound amazement (parama vismitah). The astonishment stems from the contrast between the princes' tender age and the magnitude of their achievements—slaying powerful demons like Tataka and defending a sacred Yajna. In the context of the epic, this reaction serves to elevate Rama’s stature before he even reaches Mithila. To hear such a report from a sage of Vishvamitra's caliber confirms that these deeds were extraordinary. The King realizes that he is in the presence of exceptional beings who have accomplished feats that even seasoned warriors would find daunting.

राजा सुमति का विस्मित होना स्वाभाविक है। सुकुमार अवस्था में, जहाँ बालक क्रीड़ा में लीन रहते हैं, वहाँ श्री राम और लक्ष्मण ने ताड़का जैसे भयानक राक्षसों का संहार किया और मारीच को मीलों दूर फेंक दिया। यह कार्य किसी साधारण मानव के वश की बात नहीं थी। 'परम विस्मितः' शब्द दर्शाता है कि यह आश्चर्य साधारण नहीं था, बल्कि राजा को इन बालकों में दैवीय शक्ति का आभास हो गया था। विश्वामित्र के मुख से, जो स्वयं एक महातेजस्वी ऋषि हैं, ऐसी प्रशंसा सुनना और उन कठिन कार्यों का विवरण जानना राजा के मन में श्री राम के प्रति श्रद्धा और अचरज दोनों उत्पन्न करता है।
