Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ददर्श च महाभागाम् तपसा द्योतित प्रभाम् ।
लोकैः अपि समागम्य दुर्निरीक्ष्याम् सुर असुरैः ॥ ॥१-४९-१३॥
Dadarśa ca mahābhāgām tapasā dyotita prabhām । Lokaiḥ api samāgamya durnirīkṣyām sura asuraiḥ ॥ ॥1-49-13॥
Translation
And there he saw the fortunate Ahalya, radiating the glow of her penance. She was difficult to gaze upon even for gods and demons, let alone ordinary beings.

वहाँ उन्होंने महाभागा अहल्या को देखा, जो तपस्या से दीप्त हो रही थीं। वह देवताओं और असुरों सहित संपूर्ण लोकों के लिए भी (तेज के कारण) देखने में कठिन थीं।
English Commentary
The description of Ahalya here subverts expectations. Instead of a withered, cursed figure, Rama sees a being glowing with intense spiritual energy (Tapas). Her penance has made her so radiant that she is Durnirikshyam—hard to look at, dazzling even to gods and demons. This implies that her suffering was transformative. The penance purified her to such an extent that she commanded awe, illustrating that true redemption comes from internal fire and discipline.

अहल्या का यह वर्णन अद्भुत है। सामान्यतः शाप व्यक्ति को क्षीण करता है, परन्तु यहाँ अहल्या का शाप 'तप' में बदल गया था। वर्षों के अदृश्य रहने और वायु पीकर रहने से उनमें इतना तेज उत्पन्न हो गया था कि उन्हें देखना 'दुर्निरीक्ष्य' (कठिन) था। यह दर्शाता है कि पश्चाताप की अग्नि व्यक्ति को केवल शुद्ध ही नहीं करती, बल्कि उसे एक अलौकिक शक्ति भी प्रदान करती है। राम की दृष्टि उस तेज को भेदने में सक्षम थी।
