Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रयत्नात् निर्मिताम् धात्रा दिव्याम् मायामयीम् इव ।
धूमेन अभिपरीत अंगीम् दीप्ताअम् अग्नि सिखाम् इव ॥ ॥१-४९-१४॥
Prayatnāt nirmitām dhātrā divyām māyāmayīm iva । Dhūmena abhiparīta aṃgīm dīptāam agni sikhām iva ॥ ॥1-49-14॥
Translation
She appeared as if the Creator (Brahma) had crafted her with great effort, like a divine illusion. She resembled a blazing tongue of fire obscured by smoke.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह ऐसी लग रही थीं मानो ब्रह्मा (धाता) ने बड़े प्रयत्न से उन्हें रचा हो, जैसे कोई दिव्य माया हो। वह धुएं से ढकी हुई प्रदीप्त अग्नि की शिखा के समान थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses powerful imagery to describe Ahalya. She is compared to a masterpiece created by Brahma with immense effort, possessing an ethereal quality like Maya. The metaphor of a 'flame covered by smoke' is profound. The fire represents her inherent purity and spiritual power, while the smoke represents the curse and the obscurity she has lived in. The fire was never extinguished, only veiled, waiting for the smoke to clear upon Rama's arrival.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ उपमाओं (similes) की झड़ी लगा देते हैं। अहल्या को 'मायामयी' कहना उनकी अवास्तविक सुंदरता को दर्शाता है। 'धुएं से ढकी अग्नि' एक बहुत ही सटीक रूपक है। अग्नि (अहल्या की पवित्रता और तेज) विद्यमान है, लेकिन धुआं (गौतम का शाप और सामाजिक कलंक) उसे छिपाए हुए है। राम के आगमन का अर्थ है उस धुएं को हटाना ताकि अग्नि अपनी पूर्ण आभा में चमक सके।
