Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदृच्छया एव गाम् प्राप्तौ देव लोकात् इव अमरौ ।
कथम् पद्भ्याम् इह प्राप्तौ किम् अर्थम् कस्य वा मुने ॥ ॥१-५०-१९॥
Yadṛcchayā eva gām prāptau deva lokāt iva amarau । Katham padbhyām iha prāptau kim artham kasya vā mune ॥ ॥1-50-19॥
Translation
"They look like two immortals who have descended to earth from the world of gods by their own will. How have they arrived here on foot? What is their purpose? And whose sons are they, O Sage?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"जैसे देवलोक से दो देवता अपनी इच्छा से (अचानक) पृथ्वी पर आ गए हों। हे मुने! ये (इतने सुकुमार होते हुए भी) पैदल चलकर यहाँ कैसे आए? इनका प्रयोजन क्या है? और ये किसके पुत्र हैं?"
English Commentary
The contrast puzzles Janaka: they look like Amarau (immortals/gods), yet they travel like common ascetics, on foot (Padbhyam). This indicates hardship or a specific vow. Janaka inquiries about their Kim artham (purpose) and lineage, sensing a mystery behind their pedestrian arrival in a rough forest terrain despite their royal demeanor.

जनक का आश्चर्य दो बातों पर है: 1) इनका रूप देवताओं जैसा है, फिर ये मनुष्यों की तरह पैदल क्यों चल रहे हैं? ('कथम् पद्भ्याम्') 2) ये जंगल में क्यों घूम रहे हैं? जनक को कष्ट होता है कि ऐसे राजकुमारों को पैदल चलना पड़ रहा है। यह प्रश्न जनक के वात्सल्य भाव को दर्शाता है।
