विश्वमित्रो महातेजाः पालयामास मेदिनीम् ।
बहु वर्ष सहस्राणि राजा राज्यम् अकारयत् ॥ ॥१-५१-२०॥
viśvamitro mahātejāḥ pālayāmāsa medinīm |
bahu varṣa sahasrāṇi rājā rājyam akārayat ॥1-51-20॥
Translation
The highly resplendent Vishwamitra protected the earth. As a king, he ruled the kingdom for many thousands of years.

महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र ने पृथ्वी का पालन किया। राजा के रूप में उन्होंने कई हजार वर्षों तक राज्य का शासन किया।
English Commentary
This verse establishes the duration and extent of Vishwamitra's reign. He ruled the earth ("medinim") for many thousands of years. This hyperbolic timeframe, common in epics, signifies a complete and fulfilling era of kingship. It underscores that Vishwamitra was a seasoned, experienced monarch, not a novice. The commentary on his life usually pivots here: having experienced the absolute zenith of material power over a long duration, his eventual turn toward spirituality becomes even more significant, driven by the realization that political power pales in comparison to spiritual power (Brahma-tejas).
