फल मूलेन भगवन् विद्यते यत् तव आश्रमे ।
पाद्येन आचमनीयेन भगवद् दर्शनेन च ॥ ॥१-५२-१६॥
Phala mūlena bhagavan vidyate yat tava āśrame |
Pādyena ācamanīyena bhagavad darśanena ca ॥1-52-16॥
Translation
(Vishvamitra continues) O Holy One! I am fully satisfied with the roots and fruits available in your hermitage, the water for washing feet and sipping, and above all, by your divine darshan (sight).

(विश्वामित्र आगे कहते हैं) हे भगवन्! आपके आश्रम में जो कंद-मूल और फल उपलब्ध हैं, तथा आपके द्वारा दिए गए पाद्य (पैर धोने का जल), आचमन और आपके दर्शन से ही मेरा पूर्ण सत्कार हो गया है।
English Commentary
Vishvamitra elaborates on why he feels sufficiently honored. He lists the standard offerings of an ascetic life: phala-mūla (fruits and roots), water for pādya (washing feet) and ācamana (sipping), and most importantly, bhagavad darśanena (the sight of the holy sage). He implies that the spiritual merit gained by meeting Vashistha outweighs any culinary feast. This response typifies the respectful attitude a King should hold toward a Sage—demanding nothing, accepting whatever simple fare is available, and valuing spiritual presence over material comfort. It serves as a dramatic irony, as the reader knows Vashistha plans to provide a feast that rivals the heavens, far exceeding the simple "fruits and roots" Vishvamitra is politely accepting.
