सर्वथा च महाप्राज्ञ पूजा अर्हेण सुपूजितः ।
नमस्ते अस्तु गमिष्यामि मैत्रेण ईक्षस्व चक्षुषा ॥१-५२-१७॥
Sarvathā ca mahāprājña pūjā arheṇa supūjitaḥ |
Namaste astu gamiṣyāmi maitreṇa īkṣasva cakṣuṣā ॥1-52-17॥
Translation
O great wise one! I have been perfectly honored by you with worship worthy of respect. I bow to you; I shall now depart. May you look upon me with a friendly (benevolent) eye.

हे महाप्राज्ञ! आपने पूजा के योग्य सामग्रियों से मेरा सब प्रकार से उत्तम सत्कार किया है। आपको नमस्कार है, अब मैं जाऊँगा। आप मुझे मित्र की दृष्टि (स्नेहपूर्ण नेत्रों) से देखें।
English Commentary
Vishvamitra attempts to depart, believing he has received the maximum hospitality a forest hermit can offer (roots and water). Addressing Vashistha as Mahāprājña (Great Wise One), he expresses satisfaction to avoid burdening the sage. The phrase maitreṇa īkṣasva cakṣuṣā (look upon me with a friendly eye) is laden with dramatic irony. Vishvamitra asks for a gaze of friendship, yet he is about to perform an act of hostility by trying to seize the cow. This moment captures the calm before the storm. It shows Vishvamitra’s initial nobility and adherence to etiquette, where a guest graciously accepts the host’s offerings without demand, unaware that the host possesses supernatural abundance.
