उपविष्टाय च तदा विश्वामित्राय धीमते ।
यथा न्यायम् मुनि वरः फल मूलम् उपाहरत् ॥ ॥१-५२-३॥
upaviṣṭāya ca tadā viśvāmitrāya dhīmate |
yathā nyāyam muni varaḥ phala mūlam upāharat ॥1-52-3॥
Translation
When the wise Vishwamitra was seated, the best of sages (Vashistha) offered him fruits and roots in accordance with tradition.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जब बुद्धिमान विश्वामित्र बैठ गए, तब मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ वसिष्ठ ने शास्त्र-विधि (न्याय) के अनुसार उन्हें फल और मूल समर्पित किए।
English Commentary
Hospitality in the forest consists of what nature provides. Vashistha, adhering to the code of conduct ('yatha nyayam'), offers fruits and roots ('phala mulam') to the seated King. Vishwamitra is described as 'dhimate' (wise), implying he understands the value of this simple offering over royal banquets. This scene highlights the ascetic lifestyle where guests are treated with the best available resources, however humble they may be in material terms.

वन में रहने वाले ऋषियों के पास राजाओं जैसे पकवान नहीं होते, उनकी संपत्ति कंद, मूल और फल ही होते हैं। वसिष्ठ जी ने 'यथा न्यायम्' (नियम और परंपरा के अनुसार) राजा का सत्कार इन्हीं वन-पदार्थों से किया। विश्वामित्र को यहाँ 'धीमते' (बुद्धिमान) कहा गया है, जिसका अर्थ है कि वे ऋषि की सीमाओं और वन के जीवन को समझते थे और इस सत्कार को स्वीकार करने की समझ रखते थे। यह सादगी भरा आतिथ्य भारतीय संस्कृति में अतिथि देवो भव की परंपरा का निर्वाह है।
