एतदेव हि मे रत्नम् एतदेव हि मे धनम् ।
एतदेव हि सर्वस्वम् एतदेव हि जीवितम् ॥ ॥१-५३-२३॥
Etadeva hi me ratnam etadeva hi me dhanam |
Etadeva hi sarvasvam etadeva hi jīvitam ॥1-53-23॥
Translation
She alone is my gem, she alone is my wealth. She alone is my everything, and she alone is my life.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यही (शबला) मेरा रत्न है, यही मेरा धन है। यही मेरा सर्वस्व है और यही मेरा जीवन है।
English Commentary
This verse is a beautiful poetic refutation of Vishvamitra's offers. Vishvamitra offered Ratna (gems) and Dhana (wealth); Vashistha counters by redefining those terms. For him, Shabala encapsulates all definitions of value. By stating 'She alone is my life,' Vashistha elevates the cow from property to an extension of his own self and soul. It illustrates the concept of Aparigraha (non-possessiveness of material things) while simultaneously showing extreme attachment to the Dharma-sadhana (means of duty). To take Shabala is to take Vashistha's life, making the exchange impossible regardless of the compensation.

यह श्लोक वशिष्ठ के शबला के प्रति भावनात्मक और आध्यात्मिक जुड़ाव को परिभाषित करता है। विश्वामित्र ने उन्हें "रत्न" और "धन" का प्रलोभन दिया था, जिसके उत्तर में वशिष्ठ कहते हैं कि शबला ही उनके लिए असली रत्न और धन है। 'एतदेव' (यही ही) की पुनरावृत्ति उनकी निष्ठा को रेखांकित करती है। जब वे कहते हैं "एतदेव हि जीवितम्" (यही मेरा जीवन है), तो वे शबला को एक पशु की श्रेणी से ऊपर उठाकर अपने अस्तित्व का अभिन्न अंग बना देते हैं। एक ब्राह्मण के लिए उसकी साधना का साधन ही उसका प्राण होता है। यहाँ भौतिक धन की परिभाषा को आध्यात्मिक धन से प्रतिस्थापित (replace) किया गया है।
