एवम् उक्ता वसिष्ठेन प्रत्युवाच विनीतवत् ।
वचनम् वचनज्ञा सा ब्रह्मर्षिम् अतुल प्रभम् ॥१-५४-१३॥
evam uktā vasiṣṭhena pratyuvāca vinītavat |
vacanam vacanajñā sā brahmarṣim atula prabham ॥1-54-13॥
Translation
Spoken to thus by Vashistha, she (Shabala), who was skilled in speech, humbly replied to the Brahmarishi of incomparable splendor.

वसिष्ठ जी के द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, वह वाणी को जानने वाली (वाक्पटु) शबला, विनम्रतापूर्वक यह वचन बोली।
English Commentary
The narrative emphasizes Shabala's intelligence with the epithet vacanajñā (knower of speech/eloquent). She understands the nuance behind Vashistha's words. Instead of panicking at his admission of the King's strength, she responds with humility (vinītavat). This interaction demonstrates that true power is grounded in humility. The description of Vashistha as atula prabham (of incomparable splendor) foreshadows the outcome; even though Vashistha claims the King is stronger, the narrator (and Shabala) knows that Vashistha's spiritual radiance is incomparable and cannot actually be surpassed by worldly armies.

शबला को यहाँ 'वचनज्ञा' (वाणी के मर्म को जानने वाली) कहा गया है। वह समझ गई कि वसिष्ठ जी अपनी असमर्थता नहीं जता रहे, बल्कि धर्म-संकट में हैं। वह जानती है कि उसे क्या कहना है। वह 'विनीतवत्' (विनम्रतापूर्वक) उत्तर देती है, जो दर्शाता है कि क्रोध और संकट के समय भी उसने शिष्टाचार नहीं खोया है। वसिष्ठ के लिए 'अतुल प्रभम्' (जिसकी प्रभा/शक्ति की तुलना न हो सके) विशेषण का प्रयोग करके वाल्मीकि जी संकेत देते हैं कि शबला को अपने स्वामी की छिपी हुई शक्ति पर पूर्ण विश्वास है। वह जानती है कि ऋषि का तेज राजा की अक्षौहिणी सेना से कहीं अधिक है।
