Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निर्दग्धम् तत् बलम् सर्वम् प्रदीप्तैः इव पावकैः ।
ततो अस्त्राणि महातेजा विश्वामित्रो मुमोच ह ।
तैः तैः यवन कांभोजा बर्बराः च अकुली कृताः ॥१-५४-२३॥
nirdagdham tat balam sarvam pradīptaiḥ iva pāvakaiḥ |
tato astrāṇi mahātejā viśvāmitro mumoca ha |
taiḥ taiḥ yavana kāṃbhojā barbarāḥ ca akulī kṛtāḥ ॥1-54-23॥
Translation
That entire force [of the King] was consumed as if by blazing fires. Then, the highly spirited Vishvamitra released celestial weapons (Astras). By those [weapons], the Yavanas, Kambojas, and Barbaras were thrown into confusion.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन सैनिकों ने (विश्वामित्र की बची हुई) सारी सेना को प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समान जला दिया (नष्ट कर दिया)। तब महातेजस्वी विश्वामित्र ने दिव्यास्त्र छोड़े। उन अस्त्रों से यवन, काम्बोज और बर्बर योद्धा व्याकुल (विचलित) हो गए।
English Commentary
This verse (often marking the end of Sarga 54 in some recensions) describes the oscillation of victory. First, the created army acts like a blazing fire (pradīptaiḥ iva pāvakaiḥ), completely consuming Vishvamitra's remaining forces. Pushed to the brink, Vishvamitra escalates to metaphysical warfare, releasing Astras (celestial missiles powered by mantras). The mention of Kambojas and Barbaras along with Yavanas indicates a widening of the chaotic melee. The King's Astras are effective; they cause panic and confusion (akulī kṛtāḥ) among the divine warriors, proving that Vishvamitra's ascetic merit (Tapasya) gained as a King allows him to wield weapons that mere physical creations cannot withstand.

युद्ध अपनी चरम सीमा पर है। शबला की सेना विश्वामित्र की सेना के लिए 'प्रदीप्त पावक' (जलती हुई आग) साबित हुई। जब सामान्य युद्ध-कौशल काम नहीं आया, तो विश्वामित्र ने अपने 'महातेज' का प्रयोग किया और 'अस्त्राणि' (दिव्यास्त्र - मन्त्रों से अभिमंत्रित हथियार) चलाए। यह युद्ध को भौतिक स्तर से दैवीय/जादुई स्तर पर ले जाता है। यहाँ काम्बोज और बर्बर जातियों का भी उल्लेख है, जो संकेत देता है कि शबला ने और भी विविध योद्धा उत्पन्न किए थे। दिव्यास्त्रों के सामने ये उत्पन्न योद्धा 'अकुली कृताः' (व्याकुल/भ्रमित) हो गए, क्योंकि वे जीवधारी थे और दिव्यास्त्रों का प्रभाव अचूक होता है।
