परित्यक्ता वसिष्ठेन किम् अहम् सुमहात्मना ।
या अहम् राज भृतैः दीना ह्रियेयम् भृश दुःखिता ॥ ॥१-५४-३॥
Parityaktā vasiṣṭhena kim aham sumahātmanā |
Yā aham rāja bhṛtaiḥ dīnā hriyeyam bhṛśa duḥkhitā ॥1-54-3॥
Translation
Have I been abandoned by the high-souled Vashistha? That I am being taken away like a destitute wretch by the King's servants, suffering intense grief.

क्या उन महामना वशिष्ठ ने मुझे त्याग दिया है? जो मैं इस प्रकार अनाथ की तरह राजा के सेवकों द्वारा अत्यंत दुखी होकर ले जाई जा रही हूँ।
English Commentary
Shabala's internal monologue reveals her confusion and fear of abandonment. Her grief stems not just from being dragged away, but from the horrifying thought that Vashistha might have voluntarily given her up. She refers to herself as Dina (wretched/poor), indicating that without Vashistha, she loses her status and glory. This verse underscores the reciprocal bond of Dharma: the protector (Vashistha) protects the cow, and the cow serves the protector. The disruption of this bond causes her existential distress.

शबला के मन में प्रश्न उठता है कि क्या उसके स्वामी ने उसे त्याग दिया है। 'परित्यक्ता' (त्याग दी गई) शब्द उसकी सबसे बड़ी पीड़ा को दर्शाता है। उसे शारीरिक कष्ट से अधिक मानसिक कष्ट इस बात का है कि शायद वशिष्ठ ने उसे राजा को सौंप दिया है। वह स्वयं को 'दीना' (अनाथ/असहाय) महसूस कर रही है। यह श्लोक भक्त और भगवान (या शिष्य और गुरु) के संबंध जैसा है—जब संकट आता है, तो भक्त सबसे पहले यही सोचता है कि क्या उसके रक्षक ने उसका साथ छोड़ दिया है। शबला का वशिष्ठ पर अटूट विश्वास है, इसलिए उसे यह स्थिति समझ नहीं आ रही।
