एवम् उक्तः तु ब्रह्मर्षिर् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ।
शोक संतप्त हृदयाम् स्व सारम् इव दुःखिताम् ॥१-५४-९॥
evam uktaḥ tu brahmarṣir idam vacanam abravīt |
śoka saṃtapta hṛdayām sva sāram iva duḥkhitām ॥1-54-9॥
Translation
Addressed thus, the Brahmarishi (Vashistha) spoke these words to her, whose heart was tormented by grief and who was sorrowful like a sister.

उसके ऐसा कहने पर, ब्रह्मर्षि (वसिष्ठ) ने शोक से संतप्त हृदय वाली और अपनी बहन के समान दुखी उस शबला से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse establishes the emotional landscape of Sage Vashistha. Far from being a detached ascetic, he views Shabala with deep affection, described here as svasāram iva (like a sister). This simile elevates the status of the cow from mere livestock or property to a beloved family member. The description of Shabala as having a "heart tormented by grief" mirrors the sage's own empathy. It is a profound statement on the relationship between humans and nature in Vedic culture; the bond is familial and sacred. Vashistha responds not just as a master to a servant, but as a brother comforting a distressed sibling.
