हत पुत्र बलो दीनो लून पक्ष इव द्विजः ।
हत सर्व बल उत्साहो निर्वेदम् समपद्यत ॥१-५५-१०॥
hata putra balo dīno lūna pakṣa iva dvijaḥ |
hata sarva bala utsāho nirvedam samapadyata ॥1-55-10॥
Translation
With his sons and army killed, he became miserable like a bird with clipped wings. With all his strength and enthusiasm destroyed, he fell into despondency.

पुत्रों और सेना के मारे जाने से वे दीन हो गए, जैसे पंख कटा हुआ पक्षी होता है। अपने समस्त बल और उत्साह के नष्ट होने पर उन्हें निर्वेद (वैराग्य/ग्लानि) प्राप्त हुआ।
English Commentary
The imagery of a bird with clipped wings (lūna pakṣa iva dvijaḥ) perfectly encapsulates the King's helplessness; he has the ambition to soar but lacks the means. The loss of his sons and army (hata putra balo) leads to the loss of utsāha (enthusiasm/drive). Consequently, he enters a state of nirvedam. In this context, nirvedam is not yet spiritual enlightenment, but a profound despondency and realization of the futility of his material endeavors. It is the "dark night of the soul" that often precedes a major spiritual transformation. He realizes that his current toolkit (warfare) is useless against a Brahma-rishi.

विश्वामित्र की मानसिक स्थिति का चित्रण जारी है। उन्हें 'लून पक्ष इव द्विजः' (कटे पंख वाले पक्षी) के समान बताया गया है, जो उड़ने की चाहत तो रखता है पर उड़ नहीं सकता। 'दीनो' (दीन/बेचारा) शब्द उस सम्राट के लिए प्रयोग किया गया है जो कुछ समय पहले तक पृथ्वीपति था। अंततः, 'निर्वेदम् समपद्यत'—उन्हें निर्वेद प्राप्त हुआ। निर्वेद का अर्थ यहाँ संसार से पूर्ण विरक्ति नहीं, बल्कि अपनी वर्तमान स्थिति और क्षत्रिय बल की व्यर्थता के प्रति निराशा है। उन्हें आभास हो गया कि भौतिक बल (क्षत्रिय बल) वास्तव में नश्वर और धोखा है।
