Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स पुत्रम् एकम् राज्याय पालय इति नियुज्य च ।
पृथिवीम् क्षत्र धर्मेण वनम् एव अन्वपद्यत ॥१-५५-११॥
sa putram ekam rājyāya pālaya iti niyujya ca |
pṛthivīm kṣatra dharmeṇa vanam eva anvapadyata ॥1-55-11॥
Translation
Appointing his one [remaining] son to the kingdom, saying "Protect the earth according to Kshatriya Dharma," he went to the forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्होंने अपने एक (बचे हुए) पुत्र को "क्षत्रिय धर्म के अनुसार पृथ्वी का पालन करो" ऐसा कहकर राज्य पर नियुक्त किया और स्वयं वन की ओर चले गए।
English Commentary
Vishvamitra demonstrates resilience. Instead of wallowing in defeat, he immediately sets his affairs in order. He abdicates the throne, appointing a remaining son to rule. His instruction to rule by Kshatra Dharma preserves the social order, but his own path diverges. The phrase vanam eva anvapadyata (he betook himself to the forest alone) signals his transition from a monarch to an ascetic. He leaves the comfort of the palace not for retirement, but to acquire the very power that defeated him. It represents the beginning of his journey from Rajarshi to Brahmarshi.

यह श्लोक विश्वामित्र के जीवन का निर्णायक मोड़ है। हारकर वे भागते नहीं, बल्कि एक नई रणनीति अपनाते हैं। उनके सौ पुत्र मारे गए, लेकिन परंपरा के अनुसार (संभवतः अन्य पत्नी से) एक पुत्र शेष था। उसे राजकाज सौंपकर वे 'वनम् एव अन्वपद्यत' (वन की ही शरण ली)। ध्यान दें, उन्होंने पुत्र को 'क्षत्र धर्म' से पालन करने का आदेश दिया, लेकिन स्वयं उन्होंने क्षत्रिय धर्म (युद्ध) का मार्ग त्याग दिया क्योंकि वह वसिष्ठ के सामने विफल हो गया था। अब वे उस शक्ति को खोजने जा रहे हैं जो वसिष्ठ के पास है। यह संकल्प की दृढ़ता को दिखाता है।
