Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किम् अर्थम् तप्यसे राजन् ब्रूहि यत् ते विवक्षितम् ।
वरदो अस्मि वरो यः ते कांक्षितः सो अभिधीयताम् ॥१-५५-१४॥
kim artham tapyase rājan brūhi yat te vivakṣitam |
varado asmi varo yaḥ te kāṃkṣitaḥ so abhidhīyatām ॥1-55-14॥
Translation
(Shiva said): "O King! For what purpose are you performing penance? Speak what you wish to say. I am here to grant boons; state the boon that is desired by you."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(शिवजी बोले): हे राजन्! तुम किसलिए तप कर रहे हो? तुम्हें जो कहना है वह कहो। मैं वर देने वाला हूँ (वर देने आया हूँ); तुम्हें जो वर वांछित है, वह माँगो (कहो)।
English Commentary
Shiva addresses Vishvamitra as Rājan (King), subtly reminding him that despite his ascetic garb, his inner nature and desires remain those of a Kshatriya monarch. Shiva invites him to articulate his desire (brūhi yat te vivakṣitam). This dialogue establishes the transactional nature of this phase of Vishvamitra's tapasya—he is performing austerity specifically to acquire something, not for liberation. Shiva, abiding by the cosmic laws of tapasya, stands ready to grant the deserved fruit of the penance.

भगवान शिव विश्वामित्र को 'राजन्' (हे राजा) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं। यह संबोधन महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यद्यपि विश्वामित्र तप कर रहे हैं, उनका उद्देश्य अभी भी राजसिक (युद्ध और विजय) है, सात्विक नहीं। शिव उनसे सीधा प्रश्न करते हैं: 'किम् अर्थम्' (किस प्रयोजन से)? शिव सर्वज्ञ हैं, फिर भी वे भक्त के मुख से उसकी इच्छा कहलाना चाहते हैं। यह वरदान की प्रक्रिया का हिस्सा है जहाँ साधक को अपनी कामना स्पष्ट करनी होती है। शिव का आश्वासन 'वरदो अस्मि' (मैं वरदाता हूँ) विश्वामित्र के आत्मविश्वास को बढ़ाता है।
