Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदि तुष्टो महादेव धनुर् वेदो मम अनघ ।
सा अंग उप अंग उपनिषदः स रहस्यः प्रदीयताम् ॥१-५५-१६॥
yadi tuṣṭo mahādeva dhanur vedo mama anagha |
sa aṃga upa aṃga upaniṣadaḥ sa rahasyaḥ pradīyatām ॥1-55-16॥
Translation
O Sinless One (Mahadeva)! If you are pleased, let the Dhanur Veda (Science of Archery) along with its Angas (branches), Upangas (subsidiary branches), Upanishads (philosophical/secret teachings), and mysteries be given to me.

हे निष्पाप (अनघ) महादेव! यदि आप मुझसे प्रसन्न हैं, तो मुझे 'धनुर्वेद' (धनुर्विद्या का विज्ञान) उसके अंगों, उपांगों, उपनिषदों और रहस्यों सहित प्रदान कीजिये।
English Commentary
Vishvamitra's request is comprehensive and scholarly. He asks for the Dhanur Veda—not just a weapon, but the entire corpus of martial knowledge. By specifying sa aṃga upa aṃga (with limbs and subsidiary limbs) and sa rahasyaḥ (with secrets/esoterica), he ensures that he misses no nuance of warfare. He realizes that Vashistha's power is based on deep knowledge (Vidya), so he seeks to counter it with the supreme martial knowledge granted by Shiva. He wants the theology and philosophy (upanisadaḥ) behind the weapons, not just the trigger mechanism.
