विवर्धमानो वीर्येण समुद्र इव पर्वणि ।
हतम् मेने तदा राम वसिष्ठम् ऋषि सत्तमम् ॥ ॥१-५५-२०॥
Vivardhamāno vīryeṇa samudra iva parvaṇi |
Hatam mene tadā rāma vasiṣṭham ṛṣi sattamam ॥1-55-20॥
Translation
O Rama! Swelling with power like the ocean on a full moon day, Vishvamitra considered the most excellent sage, Vasistha, as already slain.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! जिस प्रकार पूर्णिमा (पर्व) के दिन समुद्र उफनता है, उसी प्रकार पराक्रम से बढ़ते हुए विश्वामित्र ने उस समय ऋषिश्रेष्ठ वसिष्ठ को मरा हुआ ही मान लिया।
English Commentary
The imagery of the ocean swelling during the full moon (parvani) perfectly captures the turbulent and uncontrollable nature of Vishvamitra's newly acquired power. The tragedy of his arrogance is explicit here: he mentally concludes the battle before it begins, deeming the great sage Vasistha as good as dead. This reflects the delusion (moha) that clouds judgment when one relies solely on material or military might against spiritual purity. It creates dramatic irony, as the audience knows Vasistha cannot be so easily destroyed.
हिंदी टीका
वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ एक सुंदर उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं—'समुद्र इव पर्वणि'। जैसे पूर्णिमा को समुद्र अपनी मर्यादा लांघने को आतुर होता है, वैसे ही विश्वामित्र का अहंकार अपनी सीमाएँ तोड़ रहा था। यहाँ विश्वामित्र का भ्रम (मोह) इतना प्रबल है कि युद्ध से पूर्व ही उन्होंने वसिष्ठ को 'हतम्' (मृत) मान लिया। यह अति-आत्मविश्वास (Overconfidence) है। श्लोक में राम को संबोधित करना यह याद दिलाता है कि यह कथा विश्वामित्र स्वयं राम को सुना रहे हैं, जो अपने अतीत की भूलों को स्वीकार कर रहे हैं।
