उदीर्यमाणम् अस्त्रम् तत् विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ।
दृष्ट्वा विप्रद्रुता भीता मुनयः शतशो दिशः ॥ ॥१-५५-२२॥
Udīryamāṇam astram tat viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ |
Dṛṣṭvā vipradrutā bhītā munayaḥ śataśo diśaḥ ॥1-55-22॥
Translation
Seeing that weapon being unleashed by the intelligent Vishvamitra, hundreds of terrified sages fled in all directions.

बुद्धिमान विश्वामित्र के द्वारा चलाए गए उस उग्र अस्त्र को देखकर, भयभीत होकर सैकड़ों मुनि दसों दिशाओं में भागने लगे।
English Commentary
The chaos intensifies as the peace of the hermitage is shattered. The sages, who usually possess strict self-control, are forced to flee in terror (vipradruta). The use of the word dhimatah (intelligent/wise) for Vishvamitra here is complex; it likely refers to his skill and focus in weaponry, even if his moral compass is currently skewed by rage. This verse highlights the sheer scale of the attack, dispersing the spiritual community that Vasistha had nurtured. It sets the scene for Vasistha to stand alone as the protector.
