Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वसिष्ठस्य आश्रमपदम् शून्यम् आसीत् महात्मनः ।
मुहूर्तम् इव निःशब्दम् आसीत् ईरिण संनिभम् ॥ ॥१-५५-२४॥
Vasiṣṭhasya āśramapadam śūnyam āsīt mahātmanaḥ |
Muhūrtam iva niḥśabdam āsīt īriṇa saṃnibham ॥1-55-24॥
Translation
The hermitage grounds of the great-souled Vasistha became empty. In a moment, it became silent and resembled a barren desert land.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महात्मा वसिष्ठ का वह आश्रम-स्थान सूना हो गया। क्षणभर में ही वह पूर्णतः शब्दहीन (सन्नाटे में) और ऊसर भूमि (बंजर रेगिस्तान) के समान हो गया।
English Commentary
The transformation of the ashram is instantaneous and tragic. The comparison to irina (barren, saline soil or desert) illustrates the total life-negating power of the weapons used. The silence (nihshabdam) is not the peaceful silence of meditation, but the haunting silence of desolation. By contrasting the 'great-souled' (mahatmanah) Vasistha's abode with the sudden emptiness, the verse highlights the violation committed by Vishvamitra. It serves as a vivid imagery of what happens when martial power attacks spiritual centers.

यह श्लोक विनाश की चरम सीमा का वर्णन करता है। जो स्थान वेद-ध्वनि और पक्षियों के कलरव से गूंजता था, वह अब 'निःशब्दम्' (मौन) हो गया है। 'ईरिण संनिभम्' एक बहुत ही सशक्त उपमा है—जिसका अर्थ है बंजर या ऊसर भूमि जहाँ कुछ नहीं उगता। विश्वामित्र के दिव्यास्त्रों ने हरे-भरे तपोवन को मरुस्थल जैसा बना दिया। यह परिवर्तन 'मुहूर्तम् इव' (क्षण भर में) हुआ, जो दैवीय अस्त्रों की विध्वंसक क्षमता को दर्शाता है। यह श्लोक करुण और भयानक रस का मिश्रण है।
