दृष्ट्वा विनाशितान् पुत्रान् बलम् च सुमहा यशाः ।
स व्रीडः चिंतया आविष्टो विश्वामित्रो अभवत् तदा ॥१-५५-८॥
dṛṣṭvā vināśitān putrān balam ca sumahā yaśāḥ |
sa vrīḍaḥ ciṃtayā āviṣṭo viśvāmitro abhavat tadā ॥1-55-8॥
Translation
Seeing his sons and army destroyed, the exceedingly famous Vishvamitra became ashamed and filled with anxiety.

अपने पुत्रों और सेना को विनाशित देखकर, वह अत्यंत यशस्वी विश्वामित्र लज्जित (व्रीडः) हुए और चिंता से घिर गए।
English Commentary
This verse marks the psychological breaking point of King Vishvamitra. Despite his fame (sumahā yaśāḥ), he is forced to confront absolute failure. The emotion highlighted is vrīḍaḥ (shame/embarrassment). For a warrior king, failing to protect his progeny and his army is a dereliction of duty and a loss of honor. He is also ciṃtayā āviṣṭo (possessed by worry/thought), contemplating the magnitude of Vashistha's power. He realizes that his conventional definition of strength is flawed. This moment of shame is pivotal, as it forces him to reconsider his approach to power and sets him on the path of asceticism.

एक क्षत्रिय और राजा के लिए सबसे बड़ा अपमान युद्ध में अपने सामने अपनी संतान और सेना का नाश देखना है। विश्वामित्र 'सुमहा यशाः' (अत्यंत यशस्वी) थे, उन्होंने कभी हार नहीं देखी थी। इसलिए, यह पराजय उन्हें 'व्रीडः' (लज्जा) से भर देती है। यह लज्जा अपनी रक्षा करने में असमर्थता और एक ब्राह्मण (जिसे क्षत्रिय से निर्बल माना जाता था) के हाथों पराजित होने के कारण है। 'चिंतया आविष्टो' (चिंता से ग्रस्त) का अर्थ है कि वे अब भविष्य के बारे में सोच रहे हैं—यदि पूरी सेना और पुत्र नष्ट हो गए, तो अब वसिष्ठ का सामना कैसे करेंगे? यह उनके अहंकार के टूटने की शुरुआत है।
