एवम् उक्तो वसिष्ठेन विश्वामित्रो महाबलः ।
आग्नेयम् अस्त्रम् उत्क्षिप्य तिष्ठ तिष्ठ इति च अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥१-५६-१॥
Evam ukto vasiṣṭhena viśvāmitro mahābalaḥ |
Āgneyam astram utkṣipya tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti ca abravīt ॥1-56-1॥
Translation
Addressed thus by Vasistha, the mighty Vishvamitra, lifting up the Agneya Astra (Fire Weapon), called out, 'Wait! Wait!'

वसिष्ठ के ऐसा कहने पर, महाबली विश्वामित्र ने आग्नेय अस्त्र को ऊपर उठाते हुए 'ठहर जा, ठहर जा' कहा।
English Commentary
The battle commences in earnest. Vishvamitra responds to Vasistha's threat not with submission but with a counter-challenge, shouting 'Tistha Tistha' (Stand and fight / Wait). He deploys the Agneya Astra, a weapon presided over by Agni (Fire God), known for high destruction. This signifies the escalation of the conflict to the highest level of celestial warfare. Vishvamitra is undeterred by the sage's spiritual threat, relying entirely on the tangible power of the boons he received from Shiva.

यह ५६वें सर्ग का पहला श्लोक है, जहाँ युद्ध आरंभ होता है। वसिष्ठ की चेतावनी सुनकर विश्वामित्र डरते नहीं, बल्कि और उत्तेजित होकर चुनौती देते हैं—'तिष्ठ तिष्ठ' (खड़ा रह, भागना मत)। उन्होंने सबसे पहले 'आग्नेयम् अस्त्रम्' (अग्नि देवता का अस्त्र) का प्रयोग किया। यह अस्त्र अत्यंत विनाशकारी माना जाता है। यहाँ दो महाशक्तियों का सीधा टकराव शुरू हो रहा है। विश्वामित्र का प्रत्युत्तर उनके क्षत्रिय स्वभाव और युद्ध कौशल के अनुरूप है; वे बातों का जवाब बाणों (अस्त्रों) से दे रहे हैं।
