Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथ रात्र्याम् व्यतीतायाम् राजा चण्डालताम् गतः ।
नील वस्त्र धरो नीलः परुषो ध्वस्त मूर्धजः ॥ ॥१-५७-१०॥
Atha rātryām vyatītāyām rājā caṇḍālatām gataḥ |
Nīla vastra dharo nīlaḥ paruṣo dhvasta mūrdhajaḥ ॥1-57-10॥
Translation
Then, as the night passed, the King attained the state of a Chandala. He wore blue garments, became dark-complexioned, rough-skinned, with disheveled hair.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर रात बीतने पर राजा चाण्डाल भाव को प्राप्त हो गया। उसने नीले वस्त्र धारण कर लिए, उसका वर्ण काला (नील) हो गया, वह कठोर हो गया और उसके बाल बिखर गए।
English Commentary
The transformation occurs overnight, symbolizing the sudden fall from grace. The imagery is diametrically opposed to royalty: instead of white or saffron silk, he wears blue (often associated with tamas/darkness in this context); instead of golden skin, he is dark; instead of groomed locks, his hair is matted and disheveled. This physical metamorphosis manifests his spiritual alienation from the Vedic order. He has become the very thing that is prohibited from the sacrificial altar. The curse has taken effect physically, making his exclusion from society visible to all.

यह श्लोक राजा के पतन का दृश्य चित्रण है। भारतीय साहित्य में राजा का रूप सौम्य, स्वर्ण आभा वाला और सुव्यवस्थित माना जाता है। शाप के प्रभाव से यह सब उलट गया। 'नील वस्त्र' और 'ध्वस्त मूर्धजः' (बिखरे बाल) अमंगल और शोक के प्रतीक हैं। 'परुषो' का अर्थ है कि उसकी त्वचा जो पहले सुकोमल थी, अब खुरदरी और कठोर हो गई। यह केवल शारीरिक परिवर्तन नहीं है, बल्कि राजा के 'श्री' (राजसी तेज) का लोप है। रात बीतने का संकेत है कि पाप या शाप का फलित होना एक अंधकारमय प्रक्रिया थी। अब वह वही त्रिशंकु है, पर उसका राजत्व नष्ट हो चुका है।
