शेपुः परम संक्रुद्धाः चण्डालत्वम् गमिष्यसि ।
इति उक्त्वा ते महात्मानो विविशुः स्वम् स्वम् आश्रमम् ॥ ॥१-५७-९॥
Śepuḥ parama saṃkruddhāḥ caṇḍālatvam gamiṣyasi |
Iti uktvā te mahātmāno viviśuḥ svam svam āśramam ॥1-57-9॥
Translation
Filled with supreme anger, they cursed him: "You shall attain the state of a Chandala (outcast)." Saying this, those high-souled ones entered their respective hermitages.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे (ऋषि पुत्र) परम क्रुद्ध होकर शाप देते हुए बोले— "तू चाण्डाल अवस्था को प्राप्त होगा।" ऐसा कहकर वे महात्मा अपने-अपने आश्रम में प्रविष्ट हो गए।
English Commentary
The curse is specific and strategic. By turning him into a Chandala (an outcast outside the caste structure), they effectively strip him of his eligibility to perform any Vedic Yajna, rendering his quest for heaven impossible by standard means. It acts as a spiritual firewall. The sons believe that a King who rejects his Guru loses his royal divinity and falls to the lowest social status. Once the curse is pronounced, they retreat, indicating the severance of all ties. The "Great Souls" (Mahatmanos) implies their accumulated merit gave weight to their words, instantly sealing Trishanku's fate.

क्रोध में आकर ऋषि पुत्रों ने राजा को वह शाप दिया जो उसे यज्ञ के अयोग्य बना दे। 'चाण्डाल' वैदिक समाज संरचना से बाहर का व्यक्ति होता है, जिसे वेद-मंत्रों या यज्ञ का अधिकार नहीं होता। पुत्रों का तर्क था कि यदि राजा में इतनी क्षुद्र इच्छाएँ और गुरु-द्रोग की भावना है, तो उसका बाहरी रूप भी उसकी आंतरिक स्थिति जैसा हो जाना चाहिए। 'महात्मानो' शब्द यहाँ विरोधाभासी लग सकता है, लेकिन यह उनकी तपस्या की शक्ति को दर्शाता है—वे शाप देने में सक्षम थे। शाप देकर वे तुरंत चले गए, जो दर्शाता है कि अब राजा के साथ कोई भी संवाद शेष नहीं रहा।
