मया च इष्टम् क्रतु शतम् तत् च न अवाप्यते फलम् ।
अनृतम् न उक्त पूर्वम् मे न च वक्ष्ये कदाचन ॥ ॥१-५७-१९॥
Mayā ca iṣṭam kratu śatam tat ca na avāpyate phalam |
Anṛtam na ukta pūrvam me na ca vakṣye kadācana ॥1-57-19॥
Translation
A hundred sacrifices have been offered by me, yet that specific fruit (physical ascent) was not obtained. No lie has ever been spoken by me, nor shall I ever speak one.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरे द्वारा सैकड़ों यज्ञों का अनुष्ठान किया गया है, किंतु उनका वह फल (सशरीर स्वर्गगमन) प्राप्त नहीं हुआ है। मेरे द्वारा पहले कभी झूठ नहीं बोला गया, और न मैं कभी बोलूँगा।
English Commentary
Trishanku reinforces his worthiness by citing his merit: having performed numerous sacrifices (Kratu śatam), his failure cannot be attributed to a lack of piety. He then underscores his moral character by asserting his unwavering commitment to truthfulness (Anṛtam na ukta). This declaration of truthfulness is vital, as it establishes his credibility before Vishwamitra. He is essentially stating that his desire, though unusual, is not born of greed or delusion, but of a virtuous life that simply failed to yield this specific, difficult outcome.
