अशक्यम् इति स उवाच वसिष्ठो भगवान् ऋषिः ।
तम् वयम् वै समाहर्तुम् क्रतुम् शक्ताः कथंचन ॥ ॥१-५७-४॥
Aśakyam iti sa uvāca vasiṣṭho bhagavān ṛṣiḥ |
Tam vayam vai samāhartum kratum śaktāḥ kathaṃcana ॥1-57-4॥

When the divine sage Vashistha himself declared it "impossible," how can we be capable of performing that sacrifice?

जब भगवान ऋषि वशिष्ठ ने कह दिया कि यह 'असंभव' है, तो हम उस यज्ञ को संपन्न करने में कैसे समर्थ हो सकते हैं?
English Commentary
The sons display solidarity with their father. Their refusal is based on the principle of consistency within the lineage. If the master of the craft (Vashistha) has deemed the project technically and spiritually unfeasible ("Ashakyam"), the apprentices cannot and should not attempt it. It would undermine the authority of the main Guru. This rhetorical question—"How can we be capable?"—is a dismissal of Trishanku’s request as illogical. They are asserting that the spiritual capability to perform a Yajna lies not just in knowing the mantras, but in the moral authority to invoke them, which they lose if they contradict their father.

यहाँ पुत्रों ने अपनी असमर्थता नहीं, बल्कि अपनी निष्ठा व्यक्त की है। वे यह नहीं कह रहे हैं कि उनके पास तपस्या की कमी है, बल्कि वे यह कह रहे हैं कि पिता (जो कि गुरु भी हैं) के वचन के विरुद्ध जाना उनके लिए नैतिक रूप से असंभव है। यदि पिता ने किसी कार्य को प्रकृति के नियमों के विरुद्ध बताया है, तो पुत्र उसे सिद्ध करने का प्रयास करके पिता का अपमान नहीं कर सकते। यह श्लोक 'पितृ-आज्ञा' और 'परंपरा' के संरक्षण पर जोर देता है। वे त्रिशंकु को समझाते हैं कि हम वशिष्ठ से भिन्न नहीं हैं; हमारा ज्ञान और शक्ति उन्हीं की देन है, अतः हमारा निर्णय उनसे अलग नहीं हो सकता।
