बालिशः त्वम् नर श्रेष्ठ गम्यताम् स्व पुरम् पुनः ।
याजने भगवान् शक्तः त्रैलोक्यस्य अपि पार्थिव ॥ ॥१-५७-५॥
Bāliśaḥ tvam nara śreṣṭha gamyatām sva puram punaḥ |
Yājane bhagavān śaktaḥ trailokyasy api pārthiva ॥1-57-5॥
Translation
You are childish, O best among men. Go back to your city again. The divine Vashistha is capable of conducting a sacrifice even for the three worlds (yet he refused you).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे नरश्रेष्ठ! तुम बालक (मूर्ख) हो। अपने नगर को पुनः लौट जाओ। भगवान (वशिष्ठ) तो तीनों लोकों का यज्ञ कराने में भी समर्थ हैं (परंतु उन्होंने मना किया तो कारण होगा)।
English Commentary
The juxtaposition of Balishah (childish/foolish) with Nara-shrestha (best among men/King) is a sharp rebuke. It implies that despite his royal stature, Trishanku is displaying spiritual immaturity by insisting on a prohibited whim. The sons clarify that Vashistha’s refusal was not due to a lack of power—he can manage the cosmic forces of all three worlds—but due to the inappropriateness of the request. Sending him back to his city is an command to accept his mortal limits. They are telling him that his persistence is futile because the restriction is based on universal law, not on a lack of ritualistic skill.
