Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ते समागम्य मुनयः सर्वे च ऋत्विजः तदा ।
विश्वामित्रम् उपागच्छन् परम् विस्मयम् आगताः ॥१-५८-१५॥
te samāgamya munayaḥ sarve ca ṛtvijaḥ tadā । viśvāmitram upāgacchan param vismayam āgatāḥ ॥1-58-15॥
Translation
All those sages and the Ritvijas (sacrificial priests), having assembled then, came to Viśvāmitra, filled with great astonishment.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे सभी मुनि तथा ऋत्विज् (यज्ञ कराने वाले), तब एकत्रित होकर, अत्यंत विस्मित होते हुए विश्वामित्र के पास पहुँचे।
English Commentary
This verse describes the mixed feelings in the minds of the sages and the Ritvijas. They came to Viśvāmitra, but were 'param vismayam āgatāḥ' (filled with great astonishment). Their astonishment was natural, as they knew that Vasiṣṭha and his sons had rejected this sacrifice. Moreover, Triśaṅku's desire to ascend to heaven in his physical body was an unprecedented and seemingly impossible wish. This astonishment indicates the conflict between their belief in Viśvāmitra's extraordinary power and their apprehension about the task itself. They knew that if Viśvāmitra had taken this vow, there must be some power behind it, but they were also astonished at its potential fulfillment. This event confirms the extraordinary nature of the sacrifice and Viśvāmitra's supernatural capability.
