स दक्षिणाम् दिशम् गत्वा महिष्या सह राघव ।
तताप परमम् घोरम् विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ॥ ॥१-५८-२॥
Sa dakṣiṇām diśam gatvā mahiṣyā saha rāghava |
Tatāpa paramam ghoram viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ॥1-58-2॥
Translation
O Raghava! That sage of great austerity, Vishwamitra, went to the southern direction with his Queen and performed supremely fierce penance.

हे राघव! वह महातपस्वी विश्वामित्र अपनी पत्नी के साथ दक्षिण दिशा की ओर जाकर अत्यंत घोर तपस्या करने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse initiates a flashback to Vishwamitra's intense phase of spiritual pursuit. The choice of the "southern direction" (Dakṣiṇām diśam) is symbolic, often associated with Yama (Death) and extreme austerity, suggesting the fierce nature of his penance (Paramam Ghoram). The inclusion of his Queen (Mahiṣyā saha) indicates that this penance began while he was still deeply connected to his royal and domestic life, emphasizing the sheer will required to pursue such severe discipline despite his worldly obligations. This background explains the immense power he commands when Trishanku later approaches him.
