Vishwamitra’s reaction—lowering his face with a slight sense of shame (Hriyā kiṃcit avāṅmukhaḥ)—is a powerful indication of his deep-seated dissatisfaction. For such a proud and powerful figure, the realization that he is still considered second-tier, despite a thousand years of severe austerity, is a major blow to his ego and reinforces his resolve to continue his penance until he achieves equality with Vashistha.
