English Commentary
Vishwamitra’s belief that his penance was fruitless, despite the high honor, reveals the intensity of his ambition. It shows a refusal to accept anything less than the ultimate goal. Having made this powerful resolve (Evam niścitya manasā), he decides to continue the penance with even greater severity (Bhūya eva mahātapāḥ). This unshakable determination is a crucial element of the narrative, establishing the reservoir of spiritual power he will later utilize to challenge Vashistha’s curse and create a new cosmos for Trishanku.
