Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेन सत्याभिसंधेन त्रिवर्गम् अनुष्टिता ।
पालिता सा पुरी श्रेष्टा इन्द्रेण इव अमरावती ॥१-६-५॥
tena satyābhisandhena trivargam anuṣṭhitā । pālitā sā purī śreṣṭā indreṇa iva amarāvatī ॥1-6-5॥
Translation
That best of cities (Sā Purī Śreṣṭā) was ruled and protected (Pālitā) by him (Dasharatha), who was true to his promises (Satyābhisandhena) and who adhered to the three aims of life (Trivargam Anuṣṭhitā). He ruled it just as Indra rules Amaravati (Indreṇa iva Amarāvatī).

English Commentary
This verse beautifully connects the virtues of the king (Dasharatha) with the glory of his capital (Ayodhya), using a classical literary comparison to emphasize the city's excellence. Tena Satyābhisandhena - By Him, the One True to His Promises: Satyābhisandha means 'bound by truth.' This is one of the most crucial and celebrated characteristics of the Ikshvaku dynasty, which culminates in Rama, the ultimate embodiment of truth. This quality ensures the reliability and integrity of the king's governance. A king who keeps his word earns the trust and obedience of his people. Trivargam Anuṣṭhitā - Adhering to the Three Aims of Life: Trivarga refers to the three primary goals of human life (or statecraft) according to Hindu philosophy. Dharma (Righteousness/Moral Duty), Artha (Wealth/Material Prosperity), and Kāma (Pleasure/Desire) create a utopian state of peace and prosperity under Dasharatha's rule.
