Translation
O best of men (Rāma)! Having heard the words of the sage, his sons, led by Madhuṣyanda, spoke this with arrogance and ridicule.

हे नरश्रेष्ठ (राम)! मुनि के वचन को सुनकर मधुष्यन्द आदि पुत्रों ने अभिमानपूर्वक और उपहास के साथ यह बात कही।
English Commentary
Upon hearing Viśvāmitra's call for high religious purpose and self-sacrifice, his sons, led by Madhuṣyanda, reacted negatively. They spoke sa abhimānam (with arrogance) and sa līlam (with ridicule). 'Arrogance' points to the pride derived from the power of their penance, and 'ridicule' shows the contempt with which they took their father's extremely serious command. This behavior by the sons was a grave defiance, as they were not only rejecting their father's word but also insulting him. This arrogance and disrespect immediately triggered Viśvāmitra's wrath and the subsequent curse.

विश्वामित्र के उच्च धार्मिक उद्देश्य और आत्म-बलिदान के आह्वान को सुनकर, उनके पुत्रों ने, जिनमें मधुष्यन्द प्रमुख था, ने नकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया दी। उन्होंने 'स अभिमानम्' (अभिमानपूर्वक) और 'स लीलम्' (उपहास के साथ) बात कही। 'अभिमान' उनकी तपस्या के बल पर मिले दर्प को और 'उपहास' अपने पिता के अत्यंत गंभीर आदेश को हल्के में लेने को दर्शाता है। पुत्रों का यह आचरण एक गंभीर अवहेलना थी, क्योंकि वे न केवल पिता के वचन को ठुकरा रहे थे, बल्कि उनका अपमान भी कर रहे थे। यह अहंकार और अनादर ही विश्वामित्र के क्रोध और आगामी शाप का तात्कालिक कारण बना।
