Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
काम मोह अभिभूतस्य विघ्नो अयम् प्रत्युपस्थितः ।
स विनिःश्वसन् मुनिवरः पश्चात्तापेन दुःखितः ॥१-६३-१२॥
kāma moha abhibhūtasya vighno ayam pratyupasthitaḥ । sa viniḥśvasan munivaraḥ paścāttāpena duḥkhitaḥ ॥ ॥1-63-12॥
Translation
This impediment has appeared before (me), who was overcome by lust and delusion. That best of sages, sighing deeply, was distressed with repentance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
काम और मोह से अभिभूत हुए (मेरे लिए) यह विघ्न सामने आ गया। वह मुनिवर लम्बी साँस लेता हुआ पश्चात्ताप से दुःखी हो गया।
English Commentary
This verse further deepens Vishvamitra's feeling of self-criticism and repentance. The phrase "kāma moha abhibhūtasya" (overcome by lust and delusion) clarifies that the sage considered his own weakness, not just external temptation, to be the cause of this impediment. This self-realization is a sign of his spiritual maturity. "Sa viniḥśvasan munivaraḥ" (That best of sages, sighing deeply) indicates his profound disappointment and mental anguish. Being "paścāttāpena duḥkhitaḥ" (distressed with repentance) provides the necessary internal motivation for him to resume his penance. This sorrow will grant him the strength to conquer delusion and anger in the future. Here, Vishvamitra emerges as a great hero who accepts his mistakes and adopts an even tougher path to achieve his goal.
