English Commentary
Vishvamitra's choice of the 'kauśikī tīram' (bank of the Kaushiki River) is significant, as the Kaushiki River is related to his own previous life. This river was associated with the power of his penance, so performing austerity here held special meaning for him. The phrase "tapaḥ tepe durāsadam" (performed extremely difficult penance) indicates the extreme rigor of his austerity, which was very hard to endure. The number of "varṣa sahasrāṇi ghoram tapa upāsataḥ" (while he was engaged in severe penance for a thousand years) proves his unbreakable determination. After the ten years of delusion last time, one thousand years of severe penance this time demonstrates the power of his resolve. This verse depicts the climax of his spiritual ascent, where he was ready to achieve complete victory over all temptations of the senses.
