महर्षि शब्दम् लभताम् साधु अयम् कुशिक आत्मजः ।
देवतानाम् वचः श्रुत्वा सर्व लोक पितामहः ॥१-६३-१७॥
maharṣi śabdam labhatām sādhu ayam kuśika ātmajaḥ |
devatānām vacaḥ śrutvā sarva loka pitāmahaḥ ॥1-63-17॥
Translation
Hearing the words of the gods, the Grandfather of all worlds (Brahma) declared: "This son of Kushika is virtuous; let him attain the title of 'Maharishi' (Great Sage)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
देवताओं के वचन सुनकर सर्वलोकों के पितामह (ब्रह्मा जी) ने कहा—कुशिकनन्दन विश्वामित्र श्रेष्ठ हैं, अतः इन्हें 'महर्षि' की उपाधि प्राप्त हो।
English Commentary
Lord Brahma, addressing the concerns of the Devas, acknowledges Vishvamitra's progress. By granting the title "Maharishi" (Great Seer), Brahma validates Vishvamitra's transition from a king (Rajarshi) to a high-ranking ascetic. However, this title is still a step below "Brahmarishi," which is Vishvamitra's ultimate goal. Brahma’s decision reflects the principle of meritocracy in the spiritual realm; titles are earned through proven spiritual capacity. The reference to him as "Kushika's son" grounds his identity in his lineage while his actions elevate him beyond it.

देवताओं की प्रार्थना सुनकर ब्रह्मा जी ने विश्वामित्र की तपस्या को मान्यता दी, परन्तु उन्हें अभी वह सर्वोच्च पद नहीं दिया जिसकी उन्हें अभिलाषा थी। ब्रह्मा जी ने उन्हें 'महर्षि' कहा। यह आध्यात्मिक उन्नति का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण सोपान है—राजर्षि से ऊपर उठकर महर्षि बनना। 'साधु' शब्द का प्रयोग विश्वामित्र के दृढ़ संकल्प और साधना की प्रशंसा के लिए किया गया है। पितामह ब्रह्मा यहाँ एक निर्णायक की भूमिका में हैं जो तप के परिमाण के अनुसार फल प्रदान कर रहे हैं।
